Common Name: Blackstripe Topminnow
Size: 3” maximum
pH: Due to the wide range of habitats, these fish can tolerate most water conditions.
Minimum Tank Size: 10 gallons (pair)
Native Location: North America from: Gulf of Mexico East to Alabama, West to Texas, North to Wisconsin, east to Ohio, West to Iowa.
Habitat: Found in a wide range of habitats but prefers slow moving streams and canals with heavy weed cover. Can also be found in ponds and lakes that have suitable weed cover.
Temperature: These fish can tolerate high temperatures (80+ deg. F) but are best kept at 75 degrees F and below.
Diet: Not a picky eater. Will eat mini sized pellets and occasionally flake food. If given the opportunity will also eat frozen brine shrimp and live black/blood worms with gusto. In the wild this fish eats insects both aquatic and terrestrial.

Gender Differences: At any time of year this fishes sex can easily be determined by examination of the anal and dorsal fins. Males have longer and more pointed dorsal and anal fins than females.
Additional comments: This small, olive colored killifish is an excellent addition to any peaceful aquarium. As the name implies these fish spends its time in the uppermost portion of the tank only moving from top water to feed. In general these fish leave other species alone, but can be mildly aggressive with other killifish. Blackstripe Topminnows prefer somewhat low flow tanks. Standard filtration is important but strong current should be avoided. Plants (live or artificial) are also recommended. Since these fish adapt well to aquarium life, they are suitable for a beginner but will certainly be enjoyed by both novice and advanced aquarist.
