Lates niloticus is legal in North Carolina

well they are cool fish but if people see a problem with it i'll just drop the idea all together

Not a problem if you have a massive tank. Something around 1000 gallons should do the trick.

i have a pond that is roghly 120' x 80'

The pond would be great provided that you live in a tropical climate or that it's heated.
