mature at around 6 inches. It is quite rare to see any at this size
since most are unfortunately doomed to live in a 10 gallon and die
at an early age. Please, research before you buy! Raising babies
is okay in a smaller tank, but the tank must grow with the fish.
To keep a school of about 4 adults you would need at least a 75
gallon tank.</font></div><BR><BR>

South American fish, Silver Dollars do well in water that is on

perfect. They are fairly forgiving as far as water quality, but
to keep them at their happiest, the water should be clean and well-filtered.
As always, ammonia and nitrites should be at zero. The temperature

really appreciate a varied diet. You can feed pellets, flake, and

not, raisins. Silver Dollars will eat just about anything.</font></div>

<div><font color="ffffff" face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="3">Silver Dollars
are disc-shaped. They literally are shaped like silver dollars,
hence the name. They come in a few different color variations, though
all have a shiny silver base color. All the variations may also
get a slight reddish hue on the anal fin and gill cover. The most
common form is the plain silver. The next most common has spots
that are most noticeable at a young age. The spots will fade but
not entirely. Next is the Red Hook Silver Dollar. This form looks
pretty much the same as the plain silver but has a long red, hook-like
extension on the anal fin. Lastly is the variety that has a black
crescent moon shape running vertically halfway down the body. These
fish are quite striking.</font></div><br><BR>

<div><font color="ffffff" face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="3">Silver Dollars
are considered to be docile but I believe that some care should
be taken when choosing tankmates. They are very active and playful
so some fin nipping may take place. They are also schooling so at
least 4 should be kept together to keep then happy. These fish are
not outright aggressive, they just like to have fun. </font></div>
<div><font color="ffffff" face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="3">For tankmates,
choose less shy individuals that aren't so small that they could
get eaten or picked on. These guys do best with larger tankmates.
Good choices are the more aggressive Gouramis such as Blues and
Golds and various Geophagus (eartheaters). I keep a school of 4
with some Green Severums and they're doing fine. For those with
huge tanks, a large school will do nicely with Oscars or Red Bellied
Pacu. Just make sure the Silver Dollars are big enough to not get
eaten.</font></div><br><BR>
