Exotic Aquarium is a smaller, freshwater and marine fish store. Their all around selection was not too bad. No overcrowded tanks, but the fish were slightly overpriced. Had a decent selection of live plants and corals. A lot of the nessessary equipment. Their tank selection wasn't too bad considering the smaller space. I did like the variety in the cichlids and arowanas. They even had a big flowerhorn! Too cute.
All in all decent varied fish store. I shop there frequently.

A Sacto local! smile.gif

IMO, the prices at Exotic are usually pretty decent, but the health of the livestock is just average. They used to have an exceptional African cichlid selection when big Mike worked there, but he's now working at Rea Sea Aquatics in Marysville and also responsible for ordering with its sister store, the long established O Street Aquarium. As a whole, IMO, Exotic is still the best store in Sacramento largely because Capitol Aquarium is overpriced and O Street is smaller.

I thought exotic was alright, they had a really nice selection of african cichlids the last time i was there but it really doesnt intrest me. they did have a few fish in fresh and salt that you dont see everyday but nothing amazing. there prices wernt to bad.

I didnt really like the way there store was set up and it was hard to get help when you needed it. also every time ive been there the store has been filthy in the common areas and the tanks wern't to clean.

i've been there a handful of times but i wouldnt go out of my way if i didnt live close to it.

Has anyone else been to the Exotics' new location yet? New location is huge, all the tanks aren't set up yet, but looks like it is bigger than Capitol Aq. Any thoughts from people who have been there recently?

I was at the new location about a month ago, but most of the tanks were still empty. The place is HUGE though.

The store open back in October 06, I think... The selection of fishes are almost the same as the old exotic. I dropped by once in a while but look like they don't have any much of oddball fishes. Looks like it is more oriented for community fishes. Just dropped by recently, 3' jardini for $39, farm raised coldwater sturgeon (Exotic got caught a year ago for selling those but don't know why...there was just a letter taped to the tank from the fish and game dept.) African lungfishes. Most of the tank are empty though, (like half of them) but they are cleaner than the ones before. A lot of space and nice set up of the tanks but needs direction to go around. Some aisles are empty! The marine tanks are nice, a very nice selection of marine fishes at decent prices. Tanks are the perfect sizes for all kind of fishes. Half of the store is used for supplies and tanks. The customer service is not that great though, a lot of teenagers who rather work there than McDonalds. They don't really seem to know anything about fishes but are glad to help out. Prices are okay, the best in Sacto with "Jojo Aquarium" on Stockton Blvd. There isn't a tread for Jojo but their staff are good and are willing to work on prices... nice flowerhorns too. I was expecting more of Exotic, especially trade-ins, but seems like they dont do trade ins.
