G'day everyone

As some of you are aware by now. My house has finally started to take off! anyone who has built a house (especially in Perth) will know, i's a headache at best. Well everything has gone through council the old house has now been demolished and the pad has been layed! I'm VERY VERY excited to say the least, it has been a very long time coming. Even though it is going to take a minimun of 24months to finish the house.

My fish room is a dream project of mine and something I have put many hours of planning into and a room that I'm sure i'll spend MANY hours in. The main feature of the fish room is a 5mx3mx2m (16.5'x9.9'x6.6') roughly 8,000US gallon aquarium made out of concrete, limestone and steel. This tank divides the fish room and gymnasium so it will have a glass panel on both sides for viewing from the fish room and the gym room, as well as another panel that will be seen from the houses main entrance. Their i also another aquarium that is 12'x4'x2.5' that will be built into the wall dividing the other end of the fish room and another foyer in the house. This tank will house my reef inhabitants that are currently in my 8x2 reef.

I plan on taking photos of the entire construction stages as the tanks/house takes shape. So hopefully I will have some pics up within the next few months.

The main question that has been giving me some sleepless nights is.... What to fill an 8,000Gallon tank with? I had always originally planned to do a tank buster tank; RTC, TSN, arowana etc etc. Which has always been the main focus of my aquariums. But the more I think about it the more I think I want to do something different.... What would you all do? inspire me!

At the moment I am really tossing up with the idea of a pair of Black tip reef sharks, which is my opinion is the pinacle of fish keeping (next to keeping adult arapaima correctly)? anyone every kept black tips of any size? Do you think a tank with these dimensions are enough? or is it too small?

Cheers for reading. I'm as excited as a kid in a candy store with unlimited funds!

Alex

I'd be pretty tempted to put arapima in that size tank.....but mostly I like the mixed tankbuster idea. RTC, TSN, Arowana definately on my list....You could always add Bala sharks to get your shark fish ( i know it's not the same.) My dream tank would house Arowana with room for them to jump out of the water. Huge tank on bottom and the the top would be a sun room/ greenhouse area where they could practice jumping safely.

As big as 8,000gallons sounds and is. I just don't see it truly large enough to house adult arapaima. A fish that should reach 10' with proper care.

Ill post pics of a tank i saw at steinhart aquarium, They had a tank that was full of tank busters but somehow they were able to keep some african chiclids in with no problem. I guess everyone was fed enough and there was plenty of room.

But in terms of fish. I would keep Peabass or Bichirs =). Maybe a few Gars.

Oh no...why did you get me started in this line of thinking....lol. I would do a full on Amazon tank. At that size, you could do a lot, and the fish could have substantial size differences and as long as they have space and are fed well, theyll put up with each other. So here we go....lol

"Bottom Dwellers"
1. Tiger ray
2. Leo Ray
3. Motoro Ray
4. Royal Pleco's (Both Spotted and Striped)
5. Scarlet Pleco's
6. Various smaller Pleco's...i.e, Sultans, Gold nuggets, adonis..etc.

"Mid-water"
(Cichla 2 of each wink.gif)
1. Cichla Orino
2. Cichla Mono
3. Cichla Piquiti
4. Oscars
5. Silver Dollars ( side bar, Normal, and red hooks)
6. Fei feng
9. Discus (school of blue Heckels)
10. Angels (school of peruvians or Altums)
11. Severums (gold, Rottkeil, normal..etc.)
12. Uaru
13. Payara

"Tank Busters"
1. Pacu
2. Arowana (SIlver and Black)
3. Red tail Cat
4. Tiger Shovel nose Cat
5. Arapaima Is up to you...

I would love some Cichla Pinima and Temensis also but they will definitely eat the silver dollars and angels...with the rest you actually have a chance. As for the nay sayers I have seen it done, Large CIchla and tank busters with ANgels, severums, Uaru and discus, SPACE and hiding spots are the key wink.gif

Im not sure what to say about the Pima, thats one BIG fish.

I would love the black tip tank, jbut would see you having to get rid of them quick, SHarks grow FAST!

I would also consider an African Themed tank...rockwork, Frontosa, Tropheus sp., some featherfins, and schooling fish...or leave it at frontosa and tropheus and stick some Goliath TIger fish drool000.gif

okay im done day dreaming for now...... tongue.gif

Check Out Franks Page (www.Freshwaterstingray.nl) he has some nice setups, look at the "Mega tank" and some of the other large tanks his friends have...quite an inspiration wink.gif

I like this out of Laz's...
"Bottom Dwellers"
1. Tiger ray
2. Leo Ray
3. Motoro Ray (a few)

"Mid-water"
(Cichla 2 of each )
1. Cichla Orino
2. Cichla Mono
3. Cichla Piquiti
5. Silver Dollars (side bar, Normal, and red hooks) a school of 20-30
6. Fei feng
10. Angels (school of peruvians or Altums)
12. Uaru
13. Payara

"Tank Busters"
2. Arowana (SIlver and Black)
3. Red tail Cat
4. Tiger Shovel nose Cat

I think that the rays also belong here with "tank busters" but either way....

Don't go SW!!! I know it's just personal preference, but I like the tiny (well probably about 3000g), poorly stocked SA river set up at the Georgia aquarium 100x better than then 25ft whale sharks and 500lb groupers.

I'd be afraid to put rays in a tank that big. You'd not get food to them in a proper way with all those crazy fish mid level.
