So How can you sex Pantodon buchholzi? Are they like Mollies/Platy's (Spade=Female Point=Male) I know that's a sad way to explain.
Is it possible that like Arowana; African Butterflys are Mouth Brooders?

BTW, Cheapest osteoligiforms. Feel like I have a mini-Arowana

I read somewhere that males have an extended ray on their anal fin, but I've never compared any. I don't believe they are mouth breeders, but I have also never bred them. They are pretty cool fish though

Females have a rounded solid anal fin. Males have a few rays that are extended way out past the rest of the fin. As far as I know they're not mouth brooders but are very similar to their larger cousins just on a way smaller scale. Very cool little fish but they will jump in a heartbeat if startled so keep the tank covered VERY well.

It's strange that I have never had a butterfly fish jump before. I've been keeping them for at least 6 years, and never once has one jumped out. Maybe I'm just lucky and not as scary as some other people tongue.gif but still, I have a very tight cover on the tank.

Don't believe they're mouthbrooders, and as far as sexing goes, if the methods mentioned don't work for you, I dont think you'll be accurately sexing them at all. What's been said about jumping, however, ALWAYS holds true. I think I've lost somewhere around eight or nine of them to jumping, once four in one night, during a single lightning storm.

Keeping them in the basement helps. They don't get scared by the thunder at all.
