Hi everyone

I have a Jardini Arowana that is about three years old and approximately 22" long which has out grown the tank that it is in. I have set up a new much larger tank to give it the room it needs to be much more comfortable. My problem is that the fish is in a tank in my office and the new tank is at my house. I am fast approaching the time when I will need to remove it from its tank and transport it. This fish started out at 2" in the original tank and is VERY lively. I have a suitable container to transport it but I am concerened about damaging or possibly killing the fish in the process. I have had Arowanas before but never tried to do this with such a large fish. I have been told that lowering the temperture will make the Arowana sluggish and easier to control. I am not sure if using a large net is the right course of action. Any advice on this would be appreciated. This Arowana has not been with other fish before. I have three large Plecos about 15" long that will be in the tank when the Arowana is introduced. I was hoping to keep they would be good tank mates. Should Il eave them in there or introduce them after the Arowana has been settled in?

First off, your best bet at the plecos surviving is to leave them in there when you introduce your Jar. Odds are, he'll kill them on the long term, but you never know. As far as capturing your arowana goes, catching with a large net or a towel of some sort would be ideal, then transfer it to your transport container, and make it dark as soon as possible. He should chill after the container is completely dark. You're right in thinking that if he is over-active during transport, he might kill himself(or develop drop-eye) by running into the walls of the container, or cause you more trouble than is needed by jumping out and writhing on the floor for 10 minutes while you attempt to safely pick him up. Corner with a net, catch with a towel, move to container, cover it, transport as quickly as possible, do your acclimation to the new tank in the dark if you can, and you should have a happy jar on your hands.
